FDA CERTIFIED
COLORANTS

The colorants approved in the USA for colouring foods, drugs and cosmetics are specified in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, parts 1-99 (“CFR 21”). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the supervisory authority that oversees their use.

US system

A number of non-European states base their own systems on that used in the US. CFR 21 contains some differences from the EU Regulation in the purity requirements and the minimum colour content.

Synthetic colorants therefore require FDA batch certification for each batch destined for the American market and for those states whose systems are based on the FDA.
